Delivering Water & Fire Main Infrastructure for Teesside Business Park

RJ Utility Services Ltd were appointed to deliver the complete installation of a new polyethylene (PE) water infrastructure network at a business park development in Teesside. Following a competitive tender process, we were selected as the most cost-effective and suitably qualified contractor.

The project involved end-to-end responsibility for fabrication, welding, installation, pressure testing, and chlorination—completed a full 200 man-days ahead of schedule.

Scope of Works

  • Installation of Mains Cold Water supply and a boosted Fire Hydrant system

  • Pipework up to 315mm in diameter

  • Installation of associated valves and hydrants

  • Compliance with CDM regulations and Principal Contractor requirements

  • Pressure testing and chlorination to Northumbrian Water standards

Outcomes

  • Project completed ahead of client schedule by 200 man-days

  • Maintained continuous supply during live valve exchange operations

  • All testing witnessed and signed off by NWL representatives

  • Full regulatory compliance including laboratory sampling and validation

Key Challenges

  • Restricted workspaces: Our team safely manoeuvred and installed large diameter pipework within tight spaces while working around other trades and live plant operations.

  • Live service connections: We successfully replaced a valve at a tee junction without disrupting supply to the rest of the site—achieved via carefully coordinated flow stops and bypasses.

  • Strict testing protocols: The pressure testing and chlorination had to meet exacting Northumbrian Water standards, requiring close coordination with inspectors and on-site witnessing.
