Roseberry Park, Teesside

RJ Utility Services Ltd were awarded a one off contract to fabricate, weld, install, pressure test and chlorinate a new PE water infrastructure network within a business park development on Teesside.

We were awarded the contract after a competitive tendering exercise carried out by the client, identified RJ Utility Services Ltd as the most cost effective and suitably qualified tenderer.

Work on the contract commenced in September 2008 and was completed within 200 “man days” ahead of the client schedule in May 2009.

The infrastructure network involved Mains Cold Water and a boosted Fire Hydrant, ranging up to 315mm in diameter, and associated valve and hydrant installation. As this project fell under the requirements of CDM RJ Utility Services Ltd fell under the remit of the principle contractors F10 requirements and associated construction phase planning arrangements.

The main engineering challenges on this contract were the requirement for our teams to fabricate, install and manoeuvre large diameter pipes within restricted work spaces on a development site which required working around other trades and moving plant and site operatives. Our risk assessments and work methods had to take these factors into consideration when working on this site to ensure our work was completed safely and to programme.

Another engineering challenge our company had to overcome on this contract was the exchange of a valve at a tee junction while keeping the rest of the services to the site “live”. Working with the client we installed bypasses and flow stops to allow us to carry out the work whilst maintaining the supply to the rest of the site.

The subsequent pressure testing and chlorination of the pipework had to be carried out to meet Northumbria Water standards. To do this we had to liaise with your representative Mr Paul Woodcock to witness pressure tests and receive laboratory samples. We regularly deal with NWL inspectors (Dave Wood, Ken Bernard & Paul Woodcock) on our sites when we are pressure testing and chlorinating pipe.

The installation programme was devised in conjunction with both client and RJ Utility Services Ltd personnel to ensure that installation requirements, project milestones, and client requirements were matched and exceeded where appropriate
